Fine Massim Model Canoe, Trobriand Islands, Papua New Guinea. Carved and engraved wood, fibre and natural pigments. Well made model of a Kula canoe of the Masawa type, with extensive sculpted and painted decoration. Kula canoes were sea-going vessels with outriggers and sails and were used in the Trobriand Islands for inter-island visits. The most distinctive features of these canoes are the carved splashboards attached at each end of the hull. Approx L93cm. PROVENANCE John Magers Collection, Sydney.
